IsisMarc-1.53

Tagged:

anon writes: "A new version of IsisMarc, the advanced data entry interface for CDS/ISIS databases, is now available for download: it implements a Z39.50 client, a search module and many other enhancements. This work is the result of a pool of developers in Argentina and Uruguay, under the auspices of Argentina's Ministry of Education SIU Program and UNESCO Communication and information sector.

Several features were added to the software, among which:

Search Module. It implements most Winisis search features, showing results in a grid: double clicking a line will make that record active in the IsisMarc window. It does not support free-text searching.

MARC21 Import. It is possible to batch-import Marc21 records to a temporary IsisMarc administrated database. This database will not be erased until you order to do that, including when closing the application. This feature makes it possible to add MARC records to your local database for copy cataloguing.

Z39.50 Client. IsisMarc 1.53 adds a built-in Z39.50 client based upon the YAZ(c) OSS Library. It allows searching into more than 35 databases from libraries from all around the world and importing their records for copy-cataloguing. Check the manual to see important options as the "temporal activation" agent and many more. Note that through WinIsis you could add more Z39.50 sources to search into.

Punctuation. IsisMarc 1.53 can automatically add MARC21 punctuation to records as soon as you accept one. IsisMarc will try using MARC21 database rules to add appropriate punctuation (DOTS). This feature will be enhanced in future versions but was tested, for common cases. For fixing exceptional punctuation cases you have to edit the record manually. This feature can be disabled by leaving blank the DOTS parameter of isismarc.cip located in your DBISIS/database folder.

Multi-user enhancements. IsisMarc 1.53 was tested under Linux Samba drives for locking and adding records concurrently. Automatic Inverted file updating is not implemented because of DLL limitations.

A number of other minor bugs have been fixed.

IsisMarc interface and installation are now available in English, Spanish and French."

Avanti MicroLCS-1.0 beta 4

Tagged:

Peter writes: "Avanti Library Systems has released Avanti MicroLCS version 1.0 beta 4, a Java based OPAC and cataloging system. Many things have been changed and improved in beta 4, mostly under the hood. Among these are a much simplified installation procedure, a server management console, a simpler architecture and directory layout, and many bug fixes, optimisations and refinements that make this a rock solid release. Also included in this release is AvantiMARC, an application program interface (API) for manipulating MARC records. It is functional but not yet enabled in beta 4, as further refinements are underway and MARC utilities based on AvantiMARC are still under development. AvantiMARC will soon be released separately as a MARC API package under the terms of the LGPL license."

They have currently developed an infrastructure for the ILS that will use Linux, MySQL, Mozilla (XUL), and Jabber. Their main web site is at Open-ILS and the blog is already a great history and documentation store. Keep an eye on this one."
